Anne Meara (September 20, 1929 May 23, 2015) was an American actress, comedian, and writer. She is best known for her work on the television series The Stiller and Meara Show (19701977) with her husband, Jerry Stiller, and for her roles in the films The Boys from Brazil (1978), Fame (1980), and Awakenings (1990).
Meara was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Mary (ne Dempsey) and Edward Joseph Meara. Her father was an Irish immigrant and her mother was of Irish and German descent.

She attended the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan and began her career as a stand-up comedian in the early 1950s. In 1953, she met Jerry Stiller at a casting call for a television commercial. They married in 1954 and had two children, Ben and Amy.
